Be More Icelandic
March 6th 2021
BLACK FRIDAY IS DESCENDING…AND WE’VE DECIDED TO BE MORE ICELANDIC.
Jólabókaflóð, which translates roughly as ‘Christmas book flood’ is the simply lovely Icelandic tradition of gifting books on Christmas eve so that loved ones can spend a cosy night curled up with a great read.
We think this is just the most gorgeous idea and we’ll definitely be giving the gift of books this year as our way of saying ‘I love you’.
As we look ahead to the end of the year, books will be our way of digesting what’s just happened. The past few months of curating books for LoveMyRead have thrown up some themes which feel particularly pertinent – we’ve had Rumaan Alam’s Leave The World Behind which perfectly encapsulated the feeling of existential crisis many of us have felt this year; Raynor Winn’s The Wild Silence spoke to the connection with nature that many of us have rediscovered as we’ve sought solace in the outside green world… Then there have been those books which have helped us to escape to countries we might have otherwise been to on holiday: Cyprus in Ruth Jones’ Us Three; Ireland in Tana French’s The Searcher; France in Jonathan Coe’s Mr Wilder and Me and so many more… Catch our previous curations in our Shop.
But of course, no one can remember November without thinking of the US presidential election. That nail-biting time and world-changing result makes us think of presidents gone before and the changes they made. So, naturally, the release of Barack Obama’s memoir (first volume) couldn’t have felt more timely. So much so, we’ve done something special and made it available now in our November AND December boxes for quite possibly the lowest price you'll find on the internet! It’s a truly inspirational read from a titan of humanity and we think you’ll love it.
We release our December picks in just a couple of days…whichever book you choose and whichever book you gift this Christmas, we’re pretty sure they’ll make this year that little bit brighter.
