Your New Year as predicted by your favourite famous literary characters
As the bells chiming in the New Year begin to settle and we slide into a hibernation that’ll see us through to the spring equinox, it’s time to squeeze in a few New Year traditions: making resolutions, recovering from the ravages of party hangovers or perhaps dozing through the winter months with a good book… or as some prefer, turning to astrology to see what the stars have in store in this new year.

1) Jay Gatsby - The Great Gatsby

2) Elizabeth Bennet - Pride and Prejudice

3) Samwise Gamgee - The Fellowship of the Rings

4) Mr Darcy - Pride and Prejudice

5) Hermione Granger - Harry Potter

6) Lyra Belacqua - His Dark Materials

7) Cathy Earnshaw - Wuthering Heights

1. "Why, hello old sport"
The start of the year will hold a lot of ease for you, things will stay familiar and your old routine still fits like a glove, so why shake it up? Enjoy the security of the winter and spring, because there will be changes in store for the latter half of the year. If you greet change as an old friend and find confidence in your own continuity of self, then these changes will not shake you.
2. “I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.”
2022 is the year for standing up for yourself. You’ve always looked up to Lizzie and her ability to sharply express her emotions and beliefs and stand by them, but this is the year that your inner Lizzie will truly shine. You will learn to set your boundaries and vocalise your needs. This is your year, go get it!
3. "I wish I had never come here, and I don't want to see no more magic"
Things are feeling pretty dark for you right now. It’s been a long couple of years and you’ve had a lot of weight on your shoulders. You’re tired of the ongoing slog and you are longing for some time to rest. But just like Sam you have better things coming for you! Keep your chin up and soon people will start to show appreciation for your worth and your hard work will pay off.
4. “You showed me how insufficient were all my pretensions to please a woman worthy of being pleased.”
This is going to be a transformation year of self discovery and self growth. You may not find the romance that Mr Darcy does but you are going to finally see some results from the self reflection you have been doing, and those negative traits that you have recognised but have struggled to shift are going to melt away. In 2022 you will feel empowered by the change you have enacted in yourself.
5. "Just because you’ve got the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn’t mean we all have"
2022 is just one long Scorpio season for you. The sass is strong and it will keep coming strong all year. Feel free to unleash all your wisdom and knowledge. You are smart and worthy and if other people don’t appreciate you then that is their problem. 2022 will be the year you come into your independence - revel in it - do things alone and spend some time building care and respect for yourself.
6. “I’d rather not know what’s in the future. I’ll stick to the present.”
Not actually something that Lyra says, but something her friend Roger says to her. 2022 is the year to really value your friends! Recognise the people who have stuck with you and show them your appreciation and love. Stop looking for something better and realise that where you are right now is just fine. In 2022 you will learn how to enjoy the small things and find contentment in your surroundings.
7. ‘My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary.’
You have something of a dark tumultuous soul and love to be a touch dramatic. There are lots of things that will pull on that moody storm of a core within you, but this year is the time to look at building some greenery on those rocks. Invest in some superficial and perhaps short lived joys - not everything that you love has to be devastating, destructive and eternal.
