Here’s a hearty congratulations to LoveMyRead children’s curator and former Children’s Laureate, Malorie Blackman for becoming the recipient of the Bookseller’s third YA Book Prize Special Achievement Award. The accolade marks the 20th anniversary of the first novel in her Noughts & Crosses series.
For a generation of people who read the first Noughts & Crosses book when it was published back in 2001, this seminal novel articulated for the first time their lived experience of racism in a clever and utterly breath-taking way. Set in an alternate reality where Black people (Crosses) are the ruling class and white people (noughts) are underprivileged, the turning of tables in an otherwise recognisable universe makes for storytelling still completely arresting and astonishing today.
Caroline Carpenter of The Bookseller said:
And we totally agree! Though her tireless passion for Children’s literacy, Malorie has inspired countless young people to grapple with their imaginations and to find the words to articulate their dreams. We couldn’t be more honoured to work with her at LoveMyRead and to share with our subscribers her brilliant taste in books.
You can find many of Malorie’s books in our Shop.
