The Classics Calculator: James Bond
June 12th 2021
Ok, so let’s start of with a confession. You know the podcast The Guilty Feminist? Hosted by the inimitable Deborah Frances White, featuring fierce woman and their feminist failings? Well, if I were a guest I’m afraid by confession would have to be “I’m a feminist but oh my god I absolutely love James Bond…”
Let’s concentrate a minute here [if such a thing is possible with Daniel Craig in mind]…you see, if you read the books (with a misogyny filter on, doggedly ignoring the rampant sexism), they’re just such classic stories: of goodies and baddies, of truth and evil and a fight to save the world. They’re tense, thrilling page-turners that mix glamour in perhaps the most famous of all hero-defeats-the-villain storytelling. Oh, just delicious, my guilty pleasure.
From Flemming to Faulks, enjoy them too and wonder what new books you might like?
Welcome to your handy Classics Calculator: the James Bond edition.
Murder on Mustique by Anne Glenconner
Glamour, cocktails, evening dresses and secret passions. Expect gunfights on boats and a protagonist on a mission to uncover the baddy before it’s too late.
Leave The World Behind by Rumaan Alam
That sense that the world is caving in? That an evil force is at work and the baddies are toying with the people, waiting until they’ve had their fun to squish them under their heel and move on? Well you’ll love this one – tense, apocalyptic and thrilling.
Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead
Any fans of Anthony Horowitz’s Forever And A Day? I adored Madame 16, the fully-fledged heroine of the story whose willpower is a fiery match for Bond’s. If you agree, then check out Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead – a fierce, adventuring woman who takes to the skies and explores the world as a pilot.
American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
Read Bond for its heart-pounding, yes-i-know-that-Bond-will-survive-but-I’m-racing-through-the-pages-just-to-be-sure kind of adventure? Pick up American Dirt for its will-they-won’t-they suspense, updated for the real-life American migrant experience.
The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
No edition of Bond is complete without a confrontation in a dodgy location with the bad guys where it seems he’s got no way out. Welcome to Laura Dave’s superb thriller, which delivers up just that same edge-of-your-seat suspense.
