Your guide to May's books

May 6th 2021

This May, we’re super excited to welcome writer, journalist and broadcaster Pandora Sykes as our Guest Curator. Many LoveMyReaders will know her as one half of the phenomenally successful High Low podcast.

This month she shares her impeccable book taste with us, choosing her Special Pick, Careless by Kirsty Capes, former student of Bernardine Evaristo.

So many great books!

If anyone knows how tricky it can be to pick a book, we do… Here’s a super quick guide to your picks this May:

Snowflake - Louise Nealon

A coming of age novel from a spectacularly talented debut writer.

Set in Ireland between a diary farm and university in Dublin. The book will no doubt receive comparisons to Sally Rooney but in our opinion deserves mountains of praise in its own right – for its depth of feeling, breadth of experience and directness of voice. If you’re wondering whether the title refers to the jibes against young people today – well yes, it does!

For fans of: soy milk lattes and quests to find one’s identity.

The Last Thing He Told Me - Laura Dave

Soon to be a major TV series starring Julia Roberts from Reese Witherspoon and the creators of Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere.

A woman is abandoned with a mysterious and disturbing request to protect her stepdaughter.

For fans of: well-written thrillers and a ‘I’ll just do 10 pages’ turning into an entire night sat up racing to the end. Also, Julia Roberts (so, basically everyone?)

Great Circle - Maggie Shipstead

One of the most anticipated books of 2021, this novel cements its author’s place as one of the greatest storytellers of our time.

Following of the adventures of a pioneering female pilot, this extraordinary novel is a sweeping story of the sacrifices made by women to determine their own fate. Definitely a long, luxurious read.

For fans of: books which teach you something of history; stories split over different time periods; and of really delicious writing.

What’s Mine and Yours - Naima Coster

An epic story of race, love and family ties set in North Carolina.

An intricate story reflecting on the chaos when two families collide.

For fans of: nuanced stories which challenge your perceptions; complex character studies and sweeping narratives.

Careless – Kirsty Capes

Our Special Pick from guest curator, Pandora Sykes.

The story follows Bess: a teenage girl growing up in the care system – as the author did herself – grappling with her identity and self-worth, never having had a place to call home.

For fans of: taboo breaking books which reflect on one’s self-worth; funny, fierce and heart-breaking debut novels.

The Thursday Murder Club - Richard Osman

The biggest book of 2020 is now available in paperback.

Four friends in a peaceful retirement village make a date of Thursdays to investigate unsolved murders.

For fans of: bestselling books you want to be in on; cosy crime novels to be drunk with endless cups of tea on rainy afternoons.

Whichever book you choose this May, we hope you love it just as much as we have.

Happy reading!
