Classics Calculator: Little Women

"You are the gull, Jo, strong and wild, fond of the storm and the wind, flying far out to sea, and happy all alone."
Like most of us who read and loved Little Women as children, the fiercely independent, resourceful, and fiery Jo was always my favourite. She even made stubborn eight year old me consider reigning in my temper. Little Women is one of those books that should be irritating because it is all really, just a little too perfect. A tight knit family unit of strong female characters, who ceaselessly strive, and succeed in doing the Right Thing, yet, somehow the perfection of the family and the characters manages not to be cloying, and the escapist dose of achingly unattainable perfection provides a much needed antidote to reality.
There are so many beautiful aspects to the book that most of us who read it as children feel nostalgic for, but the thing that really makes my heart ache is the fierce community between the sisters and how that expands beyond their little family unit. It’s a community of sisterhood to dream about and one that for anyone who does have sisters might feel pretty impossible!
Unlike some of my other favourite classics like Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre, Little Women is a one that I don’t tend to reread very often, but with the recent film adaptation by Greta Gerwig, starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, Little Women has awoken on our screens and minds, so if you are searching for something to give you the same feelings you love from Little Women then here are some contemporary books that we know will do just that.
If your favourite character is Jo you will probably like Louise Nealson’s Snowflake, a brilliant coming of age narrative set in Ireland.
If Amy is your favourite then the luxurious and indulgent The Dressmaker of Paris is the one for you:
If its the detailed intricacies of family life that pull you in, then Philippa Gregory’s Dark Tides will satisfy any itch for family intrigues
If it's romance you are drawn to, then Caleb A Nelson’s beautiful debut will take you deep into the experience of falling in love
Female friendship, intimacy and loyalty over a lifetime is perfectly encapsulated in Ruth Jones’ Us Three
